This Lake Balaton private tour from Budapest takes you to the heart of Transdanubia, a region known for its historic towns, rolling hills, vineyards, and the shimmering waters of Lake Balaton — often called the Hungarian Sea.
Veszprém & Lake Balaton – Private Day Tour from Budapest
Leaving the capital behind, we travel west at a relaxed pace to discover charming towns, scenic countryside, and some of the most beautiful viewpoints in Hungary. This full-day private tour is designed to balance culture, landscape, wine, and local stories, without rushing or long detours.
Highlights of the Day
Veszprém – The Town of Queens
Our first stop is Veszprém, a majestic town built on five hills. Often called the Town of Queens, Veszprém played an important role in Hungarian royal history. During a walk through the castle district, I’ll introduce you to its Baroque architecture, hidden viewpoints, and centuries-old stories.
The Kál Basin – Rural Transdanubia
We continue through the Kál Basin, one of the most picturesque rural areas of Transdanubia. Known for its preserved village architecture and gentle landscapes, this area offers a glimpse into traditional countryside life shaped by farming and winemaking.
Wine Tasting in the Csopak–Balatonfüred Region
Instead of a long drive, we focus on the Csopak–Balatonfüred wine region, famous for its refined white wines and excellent terroir. We’ll visit one or two carefully selected local wineries, where you’ll have the opportunity to taste regional wines while enjoying beautiful vineyard and lake views.
Tihany Peninsula & Benedictine Abbey
Next, we explore Tihany, one of Hungary’s most iconic locations. The 11th-century Benedictine Abbey stands high above the lake, offering what many consider the most stunning panoramic view of Lake Balaton.
Balatonfüred – Aristocratic Spa Town
Our final stop is Balatonfüred, an elegant spa town with a beautifully preserved historic center. During a relaxed walk, I’ll show you where aristocrats and wealthy families spent their summers over a century ago, and how Balatonfüred became the cultural heart of the lake.
Optional Extension: Herend Porcelain Experience
If you wish, this tour can also be combined with a visit to the Herend Factory and Museum, world-famous for its hand-painted porcelain. Located not far from Veszprém, Herend makes an excellent additional stop, where you can learn about traditional porcelain production, see artisans at work, and visit the historic collection. This combination works especially well for travelers interested in Hungarian craftsmanship, design, and cultural heritage. Please contact me to discuss timing and customization options.

Tour Reviews
We enjoyed immensely our tour to the lake Balaton with Julia. There were lots of stunning views and we visited cute towns, and our favorite moment was sipping white wine overlooking the sunset over the lake.
