This Budapest food and Etyek wine tour private experience combines two of Hungary’s greatest pleasures in one unforgettable day: local cuisine in the capital and wine tasting in the countryside.

Budapest Food & Etyek Wine Tour – Private Full-Day Experience

About This Budapest Food & Etyek Wine Tour

The day is intentionally divided into two distinct parts:

  • Morning: a relaxed walking foodie tour in Budapest, using short walks and public transportation if needed

  • Afternoon: a private drive to the Etyek wine region, just outside the city

This structure allows you to experience Hungarian gastronomy in depth — without rushing or confusion about logistics.

Morning: Budapest Foodie Walking Tour

Central Market Hall & Hungarian Classics

We begin the day on foot at the Central Market Hall, Budapest’s most famous indoor market and a true local institution. This is where locals shop for everyday ingredients — and where Hungarian food culture comes alive.

As we walk through the market, you’ll learn about Hungarian shopping habits, seasonal produce, and traditional flavours. Along the way, we’ll taste classic dishes such as:

You’ll also have time to buy the best Hungarian paprika, a must-have souvenir for food lovers.

Bakeries, Butchers & Everyday Street Food

Budapest is famous for its bakeries, and during our walk I’ll introduce you to the sweet and savory pastries locals love most. From flaky baked goods to rich desserts, this part of the tour highlights everyday favorites rather than tourist clichés.

We’ll also stop at a traditional butcher’s shop, where Hungarian cuisine’s strong connection to meat becomes very clear. Here, you’ll get to try a freshly prepared hot dog — simple, local, and surprisingly delicious.

Important: the morning foodie tour is a walking experience, with short distances and a relaxed pace. Public transportation may be used if helpful. No private vehicle is used during this part of the tour.

Afternoon: Etyek Wine Country by Private Vehicle

Drive to Etyek

After the Budapest food tour, we switch gears and continue by private vehicle to the Etyek-Buda Wine Region, located just 20 minutes from Budapest. Often called Budapest’s vineyard, Etyek is known for elegant white wines, sparkling wines, and its welcoming, village-like atmosphere.

Limestone Cellars & Local Winemakers

Etyek’s most distinctive feature is its limestone cellars, carved directly into the hillsides and forming the heart of local winemaking culture.

During the afternoon, we visit several winemakers at two or three different locations, offering a well-rounded view of the region:

Old Hill – Family Cellars

We start at Old Hill, where small, family-run cellars create an intimate and authentic atmosphere.

New Hill – The Next Generation

We finish at New Hill, where the younger generation of winemakers is shaping Etyek’s future. Here, I’ll also show you the cellars of a family-owned winery, giving insight into everyday life behind the bottles.

Why tour with me

Alongside guiding, I’m the photo editor for a Hungarian food magazine, so bring your questions—I’m happy to share recipes, seasonal tips and restaurant recommendations tailored to your tastes. If you’d like to explore Hungarian food and wine in a boutique, private setting and avoid large groups, this tour is an excellent choice.

Good to Know

  • Duration: full day (about 8 hours)

  • Private only: just your group (prices cover up to 4 people; ask for larger groups)

  • Morning program: walking foodie tour in Budapest

  • Transportation (morning): on foot and public transportation if needed (let me know if you would like to add private transportation to the morning tour)

  • Transportation (afternoon): with private driver in an 8-seater Mercedes van to and around Etyek

  • Food tastings: EUR 40 per person

  • Wine tasting: tasting fees are not included; exact selection depends on availability (from about EUR 40 per person)

  • Walking: easy, relaxed walking during the morning

  • Customisation: the itinerary can be adjusted to your interests

  • Seasonality & Best Days to Visit: this tour is available year-round, but the experience can vary depending on the season and the day of the week.

    • Spring to autumn is ideal for enjoying vineyards, markets, and countryside scenery.

    • Autumn is especially atmospheric, with harvest vibes and seasonal flavors both in Budapest and Etyek.

    • Winter offers a quieter, more intimate experience focused on food culture, cellar visits, and tastings.

For the best overall experience, weekends are recommended. Many wineries and local producers in Etyek are most active on Saturdays and Sundays, creating a livelier atmosphere. On weekdays, the region is noticeably quieter, which can be appealing for some travellers but may mean fewer open cellars.

If you’re unsure which day suits you best, feel free to ask — I’m happy to advise.

I was very fortunate to find Julia’s website via comments on Rick Steve’s website. We had an all day- food and wine of Budapest- excursion with her. Julia includes typical locations like Central Market, but also takes you to unique specialty shops along the way. This was our first day in Budapest, and my only regret is we were terribly jet lagged. Julia adapted the day to meet our needs and interests. In the afternoon we travelled by motor coach to a wonderful winery. The white and red wines from the region were superb. We could not have been happier

Julia was, quite simply, the best guide we have ever had anywhere. She is passionate about Budapest and it shows – she truly loves and knows her city. She is also extremely knowledgeable, not only knowing what you would expect a guide to know, but also always offering a fascinating tidbit that you would never find in a guidebook. Her English is perfect and she has a great sense of humor, which makes the tour even more fun. We also visited Prague and Vienna on this trip, and although all of our guides were excellent, Julia was in a class by herself.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with Julia through Budapest and Etyek. I would highly recommend taking the chance to travel in Hungary with Julia.

We discovered Julia Kravianszky from on-line searches for a tour guide to show us the highlights of Budapest. What she offered on her web site, she delivered. Julia was our guide for two days of tours in and around Budapest and we would highly recommend her. She is a great guide, very well-informed, speaks perfect English. She has a lovely friendly manner that instantly forms a bond with you. She is a happy person who spreads happiness. We are history buffs and Julia provided a comprehensive understanding of the history and culture of Budapest and Hungary. She has a deep love of her city and country and very importantly Julia knows how to adapt to the wishes and constraints of her customers.

During two days, Julia took us on a 4 hour driving tour of Budapest showing us all the main sights of the city. In the evening we toured Budapest to see the lights and the views including a delightful cruise on the Danube. On the second day, we undertook the gastronomic tour of the city on foot in the morning and then drove a short distance out of the city to enjoy tasting the local wines.

We had a marvellous time – thanks to Julia.
