About This Tokaj Private Wine Tour from Budapest

This full-day private tour combines vineyard walks, winery visits, tastings of Hungary’s most iconic wines, and insight into the region’s unique Jewish history — all at a relaxed, unhurried pace.

Highlights of the Day

Tokaji Aszú and the Essence of Hungarian Wine

Tokaji Aszú is often described as the essence of Hungarian wine — a naturally sweet wine made from botrytized grapes and praised for centuries by kings, emperors, and poets. During the tour, you’ll learn what makes Tokaj wines so special, from volcanic soils and microclimate to traditional winemaking methods passed down through generations.

You’ll also have the opportunity to taste Tokaji Aszú alongside other local wines, gaining a deeper understanding of this unique wine style.

Mád – Local Winemakers and Historic Vineyards

Our day begins in Mád, one of the most important villages of the Tokaj wine region. Here, we visit one or two local winemakers, where you’ll meet passionate producers and learn about both the past and present of Hungarian winemaking.

We’ll walk among vineyards, explore traditional cellars, and taste carefully selected wines — always with time to talk, ask questions, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Tokaj Town and the Bodrog River

We continue to Tokaj, the historic heart of the wine region. During a gentle walk through the village and along the banks of the Bodrog River, I’ll introduce you to the town’s history, daily life, and long-standing connection to wine trade and river transport.

Here, you’ll meet additional local winemakers and taste more of the region’s finest wines in an authentic setting.

Jewish Heritage and the Wonder Rabbis

The Tokaj wine region is also deeply connected to Jewish history and culture. During the tour, I’ll introduce you to beautifully restored historic synagogues and explain the significance of the pilgrimage known as the Footsteps of the Wonder Rabbis — a tradition that still attracts visitors from around the world.

This cultural layer adds depth and meaning to the experience, revealing how wine, faith, and community have been intertwined in Tokaj for centuries. This can be a great addition to a Jewish Budapest Walking tour.
