This Etyek private wine tour from Budapest takes you to one of Hungary’s youngest and fastest-growing wine regions, located just 20 minutes from the capital. Often called Budapest’s vineyard, Etyek-Buda Wine Region is known for its elegant white wines, sparkling wines, and welcoming family-run cellars.
Etyek Private Wine Tour from Budapest
This tour is ideal if you’re looking for a relaxed, social, and authentic wine experience without spending a full day on the road — combining vineyards, cellars, tastings, and local flavours in a beautiful countryside setting.
The Story of Etyek’s Wines
Although Etyek is considered one of Hungary’s newest wine regions in its present form, wine production here dates back to the 12th century. Its modern success began in the 19th century, when sparkling wine producers discovered that Etyek’s cool climate and limestone-rich soil were ideal for producing base wines — remarkably similar to the conditions found in Champagne, France.
According to historical records, even a French nobleman from Champagne recognised this potential centuries ago, laying the foundations for Etyek’s sparkling wine tradition.
Limestone Cellars and Local Winemakers
One of Etyek’s most distinctive features is its limestone cellars, carved directly into the hillsides. These atmospheric cellars are both practical and symbolic — and form the heart of the local wine culture. During the tour, we visit several winemakers at two or three different locations, offering a wonderful overview of the region’s diversity:
Old Hill – Traditional Family Cellars
We begin at Old Hill, where small, family-run cellars create a warm, intimate atmosphere. This is where Etyek’s traditions feel most alive.
New Hill – The Young Generation
We finish at New Hill, where you’ll meet the new generation of winemakers shaping Etyek’s future. Here, I’ll also show you the cellars of a family-owned winery, offering insight into everyday life behind the bottles.
Local Flavours and Food Tastings
Wine is only part of the experience. Along the way, you might also have the opportunity to taste local cheese, sausage, hand-made bread, and traditional pastries, carefully paired with the wines – just let me know if you are interested.
These simple but high-quality local products perfectly reflect the region’s character — friendly, honest, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Tour Reviews
Julia was excellent. We had her for 2 days. We had arrived 4 days earlier and seen a lot of the sites but she provided so much info we didn’t get on our own. We also went to place we didn’t realize were there. Strongly recommend to tour with her. Ask about the wine country also. Great half day trip and very pretty countryside. Julia’s English was better than our whole groups. If we can get back to Budapest we will hire her in a heartbeat.
We were in Budapest for three days and spent two of them with Julia. The first day was a tour of the City and the second was on a wine tour of the Etyek region. Julia was very friendly, knowledgeable and fun. Our group of four had a great time, learned a great deal about Budapest and also laughed a lot. Truly a great experience
Julia is a fantastic guide; efficient, calm, relaxed and humorous. We were a group of 45 , yet it felt like we each had her personal attention at all times.
Julia took us to tour many vineyards in Etyak wine country back in September. We were a rambunctious group of 9 of all ages with varying tastes and wants but the one thing we could all agree on is that Julia was the best!(not even the wine talking) She is an enthusiastic and bright person with a fun sense of humor. Within minutes it felt like she was part of the group, our very own knowledgeable friend from Hungary! She was passionate about her country and we learned a lot from her. I would reccomend her to anyone! When we come back to Hungary we will definitely look her up! Thanks Julia!
We enjoyed out tours with Julia very much. She’s extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Budapest. We felt like touring with a good friend. Highly recommended!
Our group hired Julia for two days, the first being the Danube Bend, which I already reviewed, and the second day touring Budapest and vineyards outside Budapest. Again the attention to our interests and her dedication to see that even the smallest request were not only met but exceeded make for an unforgettable experience. Julia is knowledgable, personable, and yet open and an instant friend. Wonderful guide, highly recommended. Thanks again, Julia. You made our trip.
