This Pécs and Villány wine tour from Budapest blends UNESCO heritage with boutique red-wine tastings in Hungary’s sunny south. Explore the Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs, its cathedral and Ottoman heritage — followed by Villány’s hillside cellars for red-wine tastings with local winemakers. It’s my favourite blend of culture and countryside.

Pécs and Villány Wine Tour from Budapest — What You’ll See

We set off from Budapest to Pécs, a multicultural city with two millennia of history. I’ll introduce the Early Christian Necropolis (UNESCO World Heritage) and how Roman Sopianae shaped the region. We’ll visit Pécs Cathedral (with origins in the 11th century) and stroll lively Széchenyi Square.

You’ll see traces of the Ottoman era — the central Gázi Kászim Mosque (now a church), a minaret, bathhouse remains and a mausoleum — evidence of the city’s layered past. We’ll wander the Baroque old town’s cafés and courtyards with its unmistakable Mediterranean vibe.

Zsolnay Ceramics: Heritage, Design & Innovation

I’ll also take you through the Zsolnay Quarter, the creative district celebrating the famed ceramics of Pécs — think colourful tiles, Art Nouveau motifs and a fresh cultural scene. Time permitting, we’ll step into the Zsolnay exhibitions to see shimmering eosin-glaze masterpieces and browse studios for unique, locally made ceramics.

Villány Wine Hills: Terroir, Tastings & Stories

In the afternoon we drive to Villány, one of Hungary’s top red-wine regions. We’ll stop at 1–2 carefully chosen boutique wineries for guided tastings (think Villányi Franc/Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot; plus easy-drinking Portugieser). You’ll meet winemakers, learn about terroir and barrel aging, and enjoy vineyard or cellar-door views—perfect with a cheese plate if you like.

Because this is a private tour, I’ll tailor the mix of sights and tastings to your pace and preferences—culture-forward, wine-forward, or a balanced combo.
