Join my Budapest food tour for a tasty mix of sightseeing and local flavour. We’ll wander through landmark markets, tiny artisan shops and a grand old coffeehouse, sampling classic bites while I share how Budapest eats and drinks today.

Central Market Hall kickoff

We start at the 120-year-old Central Market Hall by Liberty Bridge. It’s a must-see for visitors and a real shopping spot for locals. I’ll show you the best produce and spice stalls, explain our everyday shopping habits and tasting etiquette, and help you pick up the best (and best-priced) paprika to take home.

Tastings you’ll love

Expect a balanced graze of salty and sweet: goulash soup, sausages and cheese, flaky rétes (strudel), plus a few street-food favorites. We’ll dip into small, authentic artisan shops for ice cream, cakes and candies, and I’ll point out why Budapest bakeries are rightly famous—there’s always a new sweet or savoury pastry to discover.

From butcher’s counter to street-food stall

Hungarian home cooking is meat-forward, so we may stop at a butcher for a freshly prepared sausage or kolbász. And because street food keeps evolving, we’ll try the crowd-pleaser lángos—our deep-fried, golden fritter often called “Hungarian pizza.”

A classic finish of a Budapest food tour: café culture

We wrap up near a traditional coffeehouse from the late 1800s. Over coffee and cake I’ll share how café culture shaped Budapest—why locals linger, which pastries to order, and where to go later for dinner or dessert.

Why tour with me

Alongside guiding, I’m the photo editor for a Hungarian food magazine, so bring your questions—I’m happy to share recipes, seasonal tips and restaurant recommendations tailored to your tastes.

Julia is brilliant! She has exceptional taste and knows all the secrets. Her food tour was so much more than food. It was about the history and culture as expressed in the food. It was freezing outside, but Julia was warm and helpful and very engaging. We will be coming back to Budapest someday soon and will book her for a genealogical tour. We have already recommended her to our closest friends, who will be here in June.

Our full-day private tour of Budapest with Julia was an unforgettable highlight of our 3-week European vacation. Julia’s personable, engaging, and authentic approach made our time with her truly enjoyable.

Before booking the tour, we provided Julia with some background information via email, and she crafted an itinerary that was perfect for us. We explored many of Budapest’s iconic tourist attractions, enriched by Julia’s personal insights and deep knowledge of the city she calls home. An interesting addition to our tour was the food tasting experience, where we sampled local cuisine at Julia’s favourite cafes and markets.

Julia’s passion for Budapest was evident throughout the tour, and we highly recommend her as a guide. If we return to Budapest, we will definitely seek out Julia for more in-depth tours.

If you are considering booking a tour with Julia, we suggest giving her as much advance notice as possible, as she is a popular guide and books up quickly.

We were on a Uniworld river cruise and had a couple of extra days in Budapest…so, went looking for a guide. Thankfully, we found Julia! We did a full-day tour of Budapest on Saturday and a foodie tour on Sunday morning! Julia was able to show us locations that we had not previously seen with Uniworld and her home-town view and knowledge of the city were excellent. And, who doesn’t like food! It was great to get her local take on the Budapest food “staples”! Thanks again, Julia, for a wonderful time in Budapest!

Julia had gave us an amazing and memorable tour. We signed up food tour with Julia. However, when Julia found out that we were on our last day in Budapest and haven’t visited Buda side yet. She quickly recommended to take us to the Buda side at the end of the tour. The Buda side with Matthias church was one of the highlights of our trip. In addition, we tried and ate lots of traditional Hungarian food. Julia is knowledgeable, nice, and flexible. We highly recommended Julia without any reservations.

Julia met us at our hotel and walked us through different areas of Budapest to experience all things local; chimney cakes, langos, traditional goulash, a market expedition amongst other things. She told us her story during communism times and how her family survived during and after. We truly enjoyed our morning with Julia, she is a delightful guide.

Julia was an awesome guide to Budapest! We had a great time on our food tour with Julia. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Julia arrived promptly on time and speaks perfect English. She was passionate and engaging. My only regret was not booking more than one tour with her.

Julia’s foodie tour was absolutely wonderful.. I wanted to introduce my husband and brother and sister-in-law to all the fantastic Hungarian food. Her tour definitely gave them a great taste of Budapest. Julia’s knowledge not only of the local cuisine but of Budapest and Hungary as well was very thorough. It was delightful walking and talking with her on this tour. She has a great sense of humor too. She knows where to find the best goulash in town! Thanks Julia for a fantastic foodie tour.

I can’t add much to the previous reviews. She brought Budapest to life for us in a matter of hours. Knowledgeable, witty, charming, and accommodating. We liked how she gave modern history anecdotes through her own story. Highlight of the trip. Highly recommend!

We have just spent a wonderful afternoon with Julia, exploring the culinary delights of Budapest. Julia’s passion, knowledge, caring and warm delivery during our Foodie Tour made it a memorable experience. She is a true ambassador for Budapest. Her love of the city flows from her as she takes you through the myriad of streets to taste Hungarian food. A must do tour when you are in Budapest.

We really enjoyed this tour. Julia took us to all of these different shops and cafes to sample the different foods of Hungary. Every place we stopped she furnished a sample of the foods for us to eat. By the time we finished the tour, we were stuffed. I think our favorite places were the market, the Gelarto Rosa and the butcher shop Belvarosi Disznotoros with all of the different meats. Julia is a lot of fun and knows the places to go for you to sample the best of Budapest.

Julia is a wonderful guide and this tour is highly enjoyable not only for the food but also the insights into the Hungarian way of life both now and 30 years ago. A food tour is a great way to experience a city and it’s people, the way they shop, socialise and celebrate. Julia certainly brings a great deal of warmth to her tours and we thoroughly recommend her to you.

Julia K. was excellent on our Budapest “foodie tour”. It was delightful to visit the various small food shops and local vendors in the city. But most important was the obvious enthusiasm that she had for sharing her knowledge of her city. Just delightful to hear of some of her childhood memories of the city, such as when the first McDonalds opened in Budapest. Also as Americans, we enjoyed hearing her impressions of a first visit to New York City. In the end, just a delightful experience – Köszi

The Best tour!!! Julia customized our half day tour and we saw all the highlights of Budapest and more!!! She navigated us through the city on both sides via public transportation (with minimal walking required). Our tour included recommended foodie spots and restaurants! With sunset at 4:30 pm we enjoyed some night scenes of the city! Julia is very flexible /accommdating. She was punctual /spoke excellent English. We were a group of 6. Got many fantastic photos. I highly recommend Julia!!!

We had a delightful day with Julia. Her love of her city and knowledge of the food scene was very evident. Helped us avoiding tourist traps when buying souvenirs too!

September 1, 2018

We could not possibly have had a more accommodating and fun-loving guide to take us through beautiful Budapest. Initially scheduled for a walking tour, it had to be re-adjusted to a less strenuous food tour at the very last minute due to my parents’ cancelled flights and a re-scheduling of other activities. From start to end, Julia was very responsive and accommodating. There are tons of guides out there, but it is rare to come across someone so dedicated and passionate about what he/she does, and Julia is just one of them. The family left Budapest with a happy heart and stomach.

July 28, 2018

Julia was wonderful! She met us promptly at our cruise ship and took us on a great tour of eating Hungarian food along the way! We walked the large market tasting and talking as we went. We wound our way through coffee shops, pastry shops, restaurants, and even a new soup take-out joint! We were shown a local grocery store with treats! Who knew we would all like the varieties of sausages and paprika?! We ended up on a rooftop bar drinking traditional drinks! It was a great tour of food in Budapest!

March 31, 2017

We had a absolutly wonderfull tour with Julia K. She really knows it all. She is also fun and charming. It was like having a day out with a friend. Time flew by. We give her 5 shining ? With a +.

July 25, 2016

Julia not only introduced us to a ton of delicious and unique food, she also shared an extensive amount of history with us. And it wasn’t just food history; it seemed like she had a story about every single building we passed or tiny street we ducked through. My husband and I kept looking at each other the whole tour and thinking, “how lucky are we to be led around by a local who knows and loves her city so much?!”

July 10, 2015

We spent 3 days with Julia recently – a whole day Danube Bend tour then a half day ‘foodie’ tour around Budapest followed by another half day city walking tour. Julia was delightful company and very enthusiastic and knowledgeable – with excellent English – and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with her and our visit to Budapest. We would certainly recommend her as a guide.
