The end of the 19th century became influenced by the Art Nouveau and Hungarian architects decided not only to create something vivid and close to nature, but something national, too. That makes the Budapest Art Nouveau architecture so unique and colorful.

The architecture of Buda and Pest has always been extremely diverse but unfortunately most of our buildings were destroyed during the centuries of our turbulent history.

Luckily, by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries all mandatory conditions were available for the birth of a new, world-class architecture. It included money, an increasing demand for public and private constructions and of course manpower, great and talented architects. The city became filled with thousands of newly erected buildings. This construction boom was unprecedented and these buildings’ Art Nouveau architecture still dominates our cityscape.

Art Nouveau is considered an important transition between the historic revival styles of the 19th century and Modernism. Art Nouveau was a determination to surpass historicism that dominated much of the 19th-century Hungarian art and design. It’s a total art style which includes architecture, interior design, graphic art and decorative arts, too.

We’ll see a few dozens of buildings, all Art Nouveau, all beautiful with unique characteristics, probably the most stunning examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture. I’ll show you around the city center in order to see unique little shops including the world’s only Art Nouveau florist shop. We’ll see the luxurious Gresham Palace and the neighborhood of the Liberty square, the real Art Nouveau neighborhood of Pest. I’ll take you to the first department store of Budapest and we’ll see more magnificent buildings along Andrássy Avenue. We’ll then have a loook at the Jewish Quarter‘s Art Nouveau buildings.

During the tour I try to amaze you by the elegance and symbolism of Budapest Art Nouveau, you’ll understand why it became a most defining style in the city’s architecture.

My husband and I were travelling through Budapest on a river cruise. I found Julia through an online search, which is always a bit of a crap shoot. She conveniently met us at the dock and proceeded to give us an engaging and informative tour of Budapest’s Art Nouveau treasures. We spent a wonderful morning in Pest exploring on foot, bus, underground and tram, not only the Art Nouveau, but numerous other sights of this beautiful city. A native of Budapest, Julia speaks lovingly of her home and shared the complexities of life there over time and differing political systems. She made excellent use of our time, but also made us feel as if we were chatting with a friend. I could not have made a better choice! Thank you, Julia, for giving us a fantastic day!

We highly recommend Julia! We had a fascinating day exploring the design and architecture of Budapest with her, which she tailored for our private group of university students. Her enthusiasm and knowledge is second to none, and we were amazed by the variety of buildings that she showed us – even taking us into a delightful historic house museum. Very impressed by our tour with her. Thank you, Julia!

We visited Budapest in May 2018. We booked a private four hour art nouveau tour with Julia. She was waiting for us in the lobby of our hotel at the arranged time. She took us by public transport (I always enjoy travelling by public transport with local people) to our first destination. Julia clearly loves showing people her city. She is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about Budapest and Hungary. We had some very interesting conversations about Hungarian history, politics and culture. I highly recommend one of Julia’s tours to anybody visiting Budapest. We learnt a lot more about Budapest and Hungary during our four hour tour with Julia than we did during the rest of our visit.

Julia was absolutely fantastic. We did the Art and Architecture talk – my husband and I and 18 year old daughter. Julia’s tour was fascinating – we learned so much from her both in terms of art and architecture, but also in terms of Budapest’s rich history and current political climate. It changed the way we enjoyed Budapest from that point forward, because we just looked a little more closer and with more understanding at everything around us. One of our favorite events of the whole trip! Book this!

Our tour with Julia was the highlight of our trip. She provided succinct overviews of relevant history and architectural trends that greatly informed what we were seeing. She took us to out-of-the-way places to show us the incredible beauty and detail of Budapest’s most prominent period of architectural design. Besides that, she is intelligent, authentic, and an absolute delight.
