We’ll travel into the past in order to discover two amazing little places, so that you can admire the country’s most splendid Baroque architecture: Gödöllő, with Queen Sissi’s 350-year-old summer palace and Hollókő, the enchanting little village where local people still cherish their old traditions.

Baroque became the most significant, even dominant architectural style in Hungary. Probably because of its richness and dramatic use of colors and forms and certainly because it made possible to represent one’s wealth and position in society.

Our first stop is the small town of Gödöllő, so that we can see the Royal Palace and take a walk in the beautifully preserved garden. The 350-year-old palace shows you how local aristocrats lived from the end of the 17th century. The palace was the summer residence of queen Elizabeth, Sissi. Our beloved queen enjoyed very much staying away from Vienna and her husband’s family and therefore spent most of her time in the stunning and very nicely decorated Gödöllő Palace.

Our next stop is Hollókő where you can see some fantastic pieces of rural Baroque architecture. Hollókő is an old, very well preserved little village which is also listed among UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll visit the Hollókő castle and see local artisan ateliers such as a pottery and handmade folk products. You’ll probably have the impression that this is the village where time stopped some 200-300 years ago.
